Is there a point in ever using DARK? It works only on occasions and enemies don't seem very affected by it, their attacks almost always hit. I personally recommend against buying it.

/images/nes/npcs/ani/unne.gif
I made this website
Dec 27, 2009 01:43 PM PST

There are some spells that were bugged in the NES version and didn't do anything at all. DARK may have been one of them.

Then there's AMUT, which is worthless because no monsters in the game can actually cast MUTE on you.

4 do. EYE, GrNAGA, PHANTOM and WzVAMP.

Dec 27, 2009 11:37 PM PST

yea, but what are the odds if you are playing a serious game where your gonna encounter the use of MUTE even then?

/images/nes/misc/ani/bdragon.gif

Dec 28, 2009 12:01 AM PST

True, but there's a difference between "can" and "do". I just felt like being pedantic. Technically AMUT isn't completely worthless.

Speaking of worthless, I wonder why they needed so many different kinds of instant death spells.

Dec 30, 2009 12:14 AM PST

They did that in case you were bored with the same spell over and over again

Dec 30, 2009 08:24 PM PST

Ive never seen Mute from anything in any version, and I've played all of them, aside from the obvious WSC version. At least three of the Death spells are different elements, while the other three are low odds, higher ods, low odds to all. Its gilaious how no enemy is actually immune to the death spells, I killed Chaos with one and laughed and laughed

They may have done it so that if you ran out of charges with one level, you can still cast a death spell on a different level.

Dec 31, 2009 03:31 PM PST

Me neither. Thats why I never use AMUT.

Jan 02, 2010 10:01 AM PST

I think they maybe just needed to fill in spaces so the black mages could have the same number of spells as white mages. Though, I suppose the death spells could be thought of in tiers just like the elemental spells--Death1, Death2, Death3. Thanks for the info, Devalaous, I'm definitely going to try and kill Chaos with a death spell now.

Jan 04, 2010 12:29 PM PST

theres no fun in decking the final boss with an instant death

Jan 04, 2010 12:33 PM PST

Just for the record, though, theres six instant death spells: Bane, Qake, Rub, Brak, XXXX, and Zap!

Jan 05, 2010 08:51 PM PST

Yes, in my mind it's like the cure and heal spells. You have 3 death spells that work on single targets and 3 on all targets.

Jan 07, 2010 02:14 PM PST

Still too many though.

Jan 19, 2010 07:59 AM PST

wow can you really use a death spell on Chaos

Jan 19, 2010 03:28 PM PST

Quick question. Out of ALL the spells here, what spells do i ABSOLUTLY MUST HAVE for white and black wizards???

Jan 21, 2010 11:13 PM PST

@Neo: Exit and Fast.

Jan 23, 2010 01:12 PM PST

Other than Exit or Fast

Jan 25, 2010 04:01 AM PST

@Neo:

Sleep is nice early on. All levels of fire are pretty good. LIT2-3, FAST, ICE3, and NUKE covers the black magic list.

White magic: All levels of Cure. No question. Heal's not bad, either. RUSE is WONDERFUL up till you get the Defense sword. I'd go with all A(Element) spells, too. You might need 'em for Lich. The upper levels of HARM aren't a bad way to go, and FADE and LIF2 round out the list.

Jan 28, 2010 10:05 AM PST

All white magic is useful except lamp, fear, amut, soft, and arub. Others you might want to avoid are fog and mute. As for black magic, all the elemental spells are usefel, as well as fast and nuke. Tmpr is bugged in the nes, but useful in the remakes.

Feb 01, 2010 10:45 PM PST

Lamp is legit because Dark totally works.

I will never forget a long LONG fought battle between a WzOgre and my lone thief in the bowels of Gurgu. At a sufficient level, My blind lil Thief could not so much as hit for 1 DMG against the Ogre over the course or probably over 10 turns.

Of course, he wasn't going anywhere. I wasn't going to kill Kary with a mid-teen level Thief equipped with a Rune Sword and about 8 heals, but the principal is sound.

Had I used lamp before my wm died, I would've killed the Ogre. instead, I didn't.

Also, when I first played, I did not know the power or Pro-Rings at all. I understood that they provided some defense, but I thought the casting items were more imprtant. It was a long time before I learned the truth about them, and maybe I had to be told.

ARUB was the lifesaver. You can guarantee that it was the first spell I used in many fights, especially including Chaos.

Feb 02, 2010 06:03 PM PST

Ok, i think we need a poll for each level of magic what spells u recomend

Feb 04, 2010 01:52 PM PST

I find arub isnt so great. just equip prorings and ribbons

Feb 04, 2010 11:36 PM PST

yeah, but like I said, the effects of ProRings and Ribbons aren't very obvious.

I never used a ribbon until I read stuff about them online.

I guess I wasn't an inventive enough child to equip a cheap, weak armor-value helmet and wait around to test if the character using it was more resiliant against elemental/magical attacks.

I don't feel particularly dumb for measuring the worth of a ribbon and a Heal/Opal helmet etc and using the latter instead.

This: ARUB is prwtty damn necessary when a Sandworm or an Eye or Chaos suddenly attacks.

It's useful in any party for fighting undead, but it's pretty much essential if you have a WM but no BM for whatever reason. You'll need the extra offense.

Feb 25, 2010 08:18 AM PST

Ill take that in to consideration then its only 100 gp. So, why not.

Mar 05, 2010 07:12 PM PST

about the 10000 elemental spells thing, I assume the purpose was to implement various death spells with different elements. This is not well done, though, since monsters can't be stoned or poisioned. If they could be, BRAK would likely stone enemies and BANE would poison them (and do damage). And in a perfect world, RUB would be named DETH or something like that

Mar 11, 2010 09:12 PM PST

for some foolish reason, i assumed that my knight and ninja would have some starting mp (im playing DoS, not NES) when i class changed, so i rounded up all them lower level spells, went to gurgu, and screamed in frustration. did you ever skip gurgu completely and do it last? without the cash intake from that dungeon, i was SCREWED.

Mar 11, 2010 11:11 PM PST

also, FADE made my white wizard godly. seriously. she didnt do anything at all, and then BOOM! FADE!

Mar 13, 2010 12:52 AM PST

lord of fantasy: I've made the mistake of thinking Kn/Ni would start with MP at class change as well. If ya incorporated that into gameplan and such, it'd hurt yeah :/

I've also generally not deviated from the prescribed event calendar. On the NES, I'll jump to C.Lake due to how brutal the original was and the extra equipment can help... and doing the ToF out of order is also tempting at times... but.... yeah... the money gained from loot is entire too important - especially in the original where money is much more important. Skipping a dungeon and coming back will net ya the same loot, but it'll be effectively worth a lot less on account of where ya are in the game :(

Apr 29, 2010 03:54 PM PDT

Man... the NES version's text box was tiny.

And note that LOCK, LOK2 and SABR are bugged in this release.

May 01, 2010 12:49 AM PDT

Hello,I would just like to set the record straight about the red wizard in the first final fantasy for nes.If you go all the way through the game up to near end game, and defeat the lich in the temple of fiends and maybe kary the fire fiend,at this time if you exit back out, then you can go back and buy the red wizard the nuke spell.I've done this so many times it kind of makes sense that the programmers of all the other final fantasy 1 versions removed this in the later games. Also there is a way to get a second masmune sword in the water fiend temple, but you would have to give up the second light axe in order to do so.If anyone has an original final fantasy strategy guide,I believe one of the nintendo power guides with the programmer tricks,It will explain everything.Remember,I played this game when it had just came out years ago,and my friend had this copy of the strategy guide,I only wish I could remember witch one.thanx JSQ42

/images/nes/misc/ani/bdragon.gif
*nom nom*
May 01, 2010 07:33 AM PDT

Cool story bro.

Seriously, though, is this an actual programming error, or are you just spreading rumours?

May 07, 2010 07:02 PM PDT

Absolutely 100% True Fact. It was left in the original final fantasy and the strategy guide said right on the tip box (programmer secret) I am now going to try to pull off the second masmune trick again,I can't remember if you have to beat the kraken before you get anything from the treasure boxes or just pick up the tablet and beat him and then exit out and go back in and get the treasures.Maybe you have to know witch light axe box to get first, who knows?I wish someone could get ahold of one of the original Nintendo employee's to remember how it works, but I know for a fact,It does indeed work.I can't believe that no one from the ninties remembers that trick ,but I myself am 42yrs young and believe me,I am a caregiver and all I do is play outdated rpg games and the like .I 'm thinking of getting a psp to mod out for all my vintage games. I stand by my words.

May 08, 2010 07:54 PM PDT

Update: I am sure it wasn't in a Nintendo power guide! This is getting extremely frustrating ,for now I will have to search every Final Fantasy Tip and game guide that can be found,I only know it had to be printed about the same time as the game or a little later.I WILL NOT REST UNTIL I FIND THAT BOOK! P.S. The book had a black cover and was about the same size as the official guide. Again,ON WITH MY QUEST!

May 13, 2010 11:09 PM PDT

What no green Magick?

May 20, 2010 11:11 AM PDT

How do you delete magic in final fantasy 1 on the NES version?

May 20, 2010 09:26 PM PDT

One of the things I like about the NES version is that you need to think of what Magic you want because once you pick a spell you can not change it.

I like a Red and White Mage together because of that so I can have all the spells for that Magic Level.

May 23, 2010 09:03 PM PDT

thank you ^^

May 25, 2010 04:04 PM PDT

@michale are you serious? I never knew about the RM getting Nuke, thats awesome if it's true, I will try it and I'll take a look for this strategy guide of your's as well

Jun 16, 2010 05:43 AM PDT

Is there a difference between the instant death spells? I know some are multi target but anything else? Are some more accurate or something? I never use them, just curious.

Jul 18, 2010 06:36 PM PDT

Hurm. Even if I am allowed to use Lv. 8 Magic, I still use Lv. 3-4.

Jul 25, 2010 12:44 AM PDT

So many of the later-level Black spells are nothing more than a waste of Gil. A LOT of Gil. QAKE won't work on a large fraction on enemies (anything that swims, flies, or would be useful to off instantly), STUN doesn't seem to be any better then HOLD, BLND is useless, and SABR . . . hmm, temporarily sharpen the knife wielded by the weakest fighter in the party. Just what TMPR does, and with none of the versatility! Even if the programming wasn't bugged, it's an awful concept for a level 7 spell

Jul 27, 2010 04:43 PM PDT

STUN's major problem is that it always works if target hp <(=?) 300. However, it always FAILS if hp > 300. heh

FF1 is the only game I have ever used an instant death attack in. When I need HP in the water floors of the TOF, I use the bane sword to kill off parts of a party of Seatrolls, those sea snake things, and those lobster things. My fighter finishes the survivors so there is only one left, while everyone else uses equipped heal equipment. Since they can only do one damage, they aren't really effective at doing anything (I'm not sure if the snakes or lobsters can poison, I've never seen it happen and even if it did it adds two extra damage per round. Weak.).

Jul 27, 2010 04:52 PM PDT

Also, was XFER/Dispel intended to remove elemental resistances or status buffs like AFIR/AICE/ALIT/ARUB and all that crap? Looking at the later games Dispel tends to remove the status buffs, but wouldn't that make it close to useless in FF1?

Jul 30, 2010 10:07 AM PDT

I thought that nuke and fade would do killer damage and guess what, they only did 100! I was hoping for something in the 2 or 3 hundreds. My ninja can hit that much whith a dagger! (I know, over exageration)

Jul 31, 2010 06:46 AM PDT

Monsters, especially late game monsters usually have quite high magic defense

After looking through the chart, I will mention that SLOW and SLO2 will limit any affected enemies (or allies) to one physical hit per round of battle, often reducing the physical damage they can do.

It works best (in theory) on enemies that regularly get in 6 Hits or more when they attack, such as Kraken and Sorcerers. With only one strike coming your way instead of 8 or 10, you only take that fraction of damage - or chance of getting slain by a Sorcerer

Don't waste your time on certain other critters, though. Spellcasters will still be able to lob magic at full effect, and WarMech only needs the one hit to stomp you for those painful hundreds :/

@Kain That's true that you can use death(XXXX on this case) on the final boss(Chaos)

The ZAP! spell is some kind of useless because you have XXXX to do what ZAP! does, strange. And,why it says that the LOCK spell is useless?

RUB was originally Kill in the Famicom version,

same for NUKE being FLARE.

Hi everyone, new to the site. Just started up a new game (NES emulator) and I remember always debating on the spells to take at level 3 and 5 for the White Mage. Just wanted to query people's opinions. I usually take:

Level 3: CUR2, HRM2, AFIR

Level 5: CUR3, HRM3, LIFE

Also, I do not recall the White Wizard being able to use EXIT, only the Red Wizard -- will confirm once I get up to that point (just made it to Elfland). Or might this have been a change made in ports?

PURE costs 4000.

a Pure potion costs 75, so you can afford to be poisoned 53 times before the PURE spell is actually worth its Gil.

And that's poison from after you bought the spell, and before you get ribbons.

I would save that 4000 for other things, personally.

lots of typos

Red Wizards can learn Warp AND Exit?!? Obviously time travelers.

LOCK seems utterly useless. I bought it once, and cast it a dozen times *only against low level enemies*, and it was "ineffective" every single time. I feel like this spell is bugged : (
